Yoga asks the individual to be present in the moment, not to worry about the future nor to dwell on the past. Can you quietly look inward? My students ask me if I meditate. My response is that it is a work in progress. Yoga asks that you simply just practice it every day. Now I didn't come to this level of knowledge until I began studies with Gary Kraftsow. It is through Gary that I began to understand that yoga is not an exercise program. Meditation is the art of focus. Today we attempt to multi-task our way through our day. The I-phone is the link to happiness. Look what this new technology can do. Our movies are now in 3-D. Machines can do things more swiftly than before. There are now particles even smaller than atoms which we can now use to do who knows what. Time flies faster now than ever before and we want healing to follow at that pace.
The more I question what I see in both clients of massage and my yoga students, the less concrete are my opinions on what will help them. That's very interesting is my usual remark in sessions or a classes. Some of the things that I have learned from people is that putting the power of the mind can bring change to the body. Relaxation is a learned response once you have been injured. Laughter is a necessary part of healing.
What is your nature? Are you someone that would rather run around the block or just stroll? Is a game really just a matter of the competitive edge? The all consuming need to win. Do you anger easily or are you easy going? Are you the couch dweller, who just loves to eat? Do you know how stress really effects you? Now would you think that any of this would matter in finding a way out of pain?

So here I sit contemplating my portion which is entitled " When All Else Fails....a toolbox of self help". The older we get the more issues begin to arise with our health. Some of us are lucky to be robust in our health. Some of us are lucky to never have fallen, spraining joints, tendons or ligaments. Some of us are lucky to never had surgery or even broken bones.
Some of us are lucky to never had a whiplash injury of any sort. And then there is the rest of us. My journey in life started with health issues at 4 months of age. So life has always been exciting and at times a challenge. Along the way I found that crying doesn't help. Yelling will only get you so far. Educate yourself as best as possible. Remaining positive helps. And now I practice the art of surrender, which isn't easy.
Today the medical establishment let's us know that we have the best medical treatments available in the world. But are they available to all of us. How much will it cost and will it be available. Sometimes for certain physical issues, as American we expect instant transformation with little effort on our part. But is that notion realistic? If you are told by your doctor that there is nothing wrong or that he or she can't help you. Do you stop there and give up? With the internet at our finger tips can we believe all that we read. Can you tell a person's bias or reason for creating their site?
I have gone to people looking for answers and it usually took several inquiries before I got an answer that made sense. Okay, I'm stubborn and at times foolish. But my experience has shown me that a pill doesn't solve all problems. I am not a machine and I have no interchangeable parts. Finding out what is going on can take many paths and not just one. Believe in your self is also very important. If you think that things will never change then you are right. What works for one person may not work for you. In a path towards feeling better, can take much longer than you think and don't put limits on your self. And I'm not saying that you should not look to a doctor for help. What I am saying is don't give up your role in getting better.
*When pain occurs ask yourself what kind of pain it is.
*And don't be afraid to ask yourself.
* Is it always in the same spot or does it move?
*What have you been doing?
*Does it occur only with certain movements? And if so, have you stopped using that area?
* Have you started a new medication or have you been on the same dose for many years but made changes in your lifestyle?
*Have you been given a healing time line?
* How well do you follow directions?
*How often do you pay attention to your breath patterns?
*Yes, pain puts you on guard and makes you hold your breath and change movement patterns.
